Story
Buro is not our horse — but few horses belong to our story the way he does. He was on our farm for a time, when his owner was temporarily unable to look after him. Buro lived here in the herd then and covered mares. For that month at least he was freed from the stable and could take his ease among his own kind.
When his owner recovered, we had to give him back. Liso was here at the time as well — he stayed longer, but then we gave him back too. I regret it to this day: he could have stayed a while longer, and perhaps he would have stayed for good.
When it weighs on me, I go to see Buro. And I am slowly persuading his owner to retire himself — and to bring the horses to us, so they do not stand in a dark stable. I try to explain that he will not lose them: they will still be his, only ten minutes away by car. He can do light work with them — no forest, no meeting quotas. He will still be with his horses. And I will be glad that one more person comes to look them over and check that everything is as it should be.
How Buro is doing
Buro's owner has found him a new home. With the people whose five mares Buro used to go and cover. They have paddocks and pasture there — and Buro can be out with the mares, not alone behind a fence.
So in the end his retirement will be a good one after all.
Together with his owner we did consider giving Buro his retirement here. But we could not offer him the conditions he needs. Buro is a stallion. We do have mares, but they are not in foal and we do not want them covered — so he could not go into the herd with them. He would have stayed shut in a small paddock, calling after the other horses. That is not a retirement. And castration at his age was out of the question.
So we are glad it turned out this way. It is a better place than we could have given him.
And there is one thing we want to say out loud. Buro's owner did not have to look for anything. He could have left him standing where he was, or sold him to the first person who came along — with a stallion of that age nobody would have asked questions. Instead he looked for a place where Buro would have a paddock, pasture and mares around him. Nobody gets anything for a decision like that and it is written down nowhere. So we will write it down here: he decided right, and Buro will have a good life precisely because of it. We thank him.

Would you like to help?
We do not collect for Buro. He has a new home where he will have paddocks, pasture and mares around him — there is no need to contribute towards his adoption.
If it was him in particular you wanted to support, you can contribute to the work of our association and so help the horses who still need it.

What we need right now →
A light aluminium shovel for mucking out, a corrugated pipe for a reservoir, LDPE hoses for a water supply, concrete utility poles. Maybe you know where to find them.
