Rigo Rigo

Story

A draught horse of the Muráň Noriker breed. In August 2025 he came to us with Monday morning disease. A young, strong horse who could not get up.

It was Monday morning disease, in veterinary terms acute rhabdomyolysis syndrome. It happens when a horse stands for a few days while it is still getting the same feed as when it was working, or even more, and then goes straight into heavy work. The muscles can't take it and begin to break down. On top of that came a suspicion of laminitis.

How much exactly Rigo was getting during those days, we don't know. Perhaps only as much as when he was working. But that is the trap: for a horse that is standing, even a normal working ration is already a lot.

We don't blame anyone for it. These are things that simply happen, even to people who know horses.

The broken-down muscle fibres release myoglobin into the blood, and it is toxic to the kidneys. That is why this disease used to be called azoturia too, and why fluids are the first thing to deal with.

According to his blood tests Rigo's kidneys were affected, but not badly. He was given drips, although giving them to him was difficult, and within two weeks the results were improving a lot. But he didn't get back on his feet.

We were not alone in it. Our vet led the treatment and throughout the eight months she consulted other vets. We considered every option, including a clinic.

Eight months of fighting for his life followed: days and nights at his side, drips, a lifting sling, laser and other treatments we tried together with the vets. He fought bravely until April 2026.

We could not save him. But no one has taught us as much as he did, and thanks to him, too, we can help other horses better today.

This can be spared a horse

We write this here on purpose, because it can be prevented and many people simply don't know about it. When a horse has stood in the stable for several days, the feed should be cut back. Not left the same, and certainly not increased. And after such a rest it should not go straight back into heavy work. It is one decision, and it can be the difference between a horse that is calmly eating in the evening and a horse that doesn't get up in the morning.

What we need right now →

A light aluminium shovel for mucking out, a corrugated pipe for a reservoir, LDPE hoses for a water supply, concrete utility poles. Maybe you know where to find them.
